The Palazzo Carminati in Venice also had a puppet theatre that was described in the Hotel Drouot’s 1933 auction catalogue as a “wood sculpted puppet theatre, painted and gilded, with flower-vase decorations, foliage, emblems and masks and, at the top, a mirror and a coat of arms. The Ca’ Rezzonico Palace, located on the Grand Canal in Venice, retains an 18th century puppet theatre with its cast of puppets. Several centuries ago, many Venetian palaces would house a private puppet theatre for rod marionettes (French: marionnettes à tringle). However, these could wind up unused for most of the time, and would have the effect of limiting the creative aspect by confining the puppet to only one technique and only one type of manipulation – usually operated from below, and most particularly that of glove puppetry. These puppet stages can be installed in classrooms, libraries, halls, or living rooms, and can be constructed from an immovable, hard material. Thus affecting the kind of puppet stage that would house such a show.Īs mentioned above, there are several types of puppet stages: permanent stages, portable stages, and stages that can be disassembled. The public’s taste in France, for example, also changed away from the Polichinelle rod marionette (French: marionnette à tringle) and towards the Guignol glove puppet. The castelet thus became its replica in miniature. Later, in France as elsewhere, it was of the utmost importance that these small puppet theatre stages resemble as closely as possible the larger theatres, with an Italian style stage (see Décor / Stage Setting and the Italian-style Stage). The back of the castelet as shown in these miniatures is formed by a low arch as the manipulators, undoubtedly hidden under the playboard (French: tablette), are concealed by a curtain. However, judging from Middle Age imagery, “ castelet” found its origin due to its appearance as a castle with battlements as seen in the two miniatures by Jehan de Grise ( Li Romans du boin roi Alixandre, 1344). The French word “ castelet” is derived from “ castel” and has been associated with the meaning of “little puppet theatre” only since 1907. Other performance sites where puppet shows were performed dating from the 19th century were fairground theatre (French: théâtre foraines) and taverns (French: “ estaminets à marionettes”) where successful plays from the actors’ theatre were adapted for puppets. These changes in the venues were reflected in the terms favoured over time for their use: “tabernacles”, “ retables” or altarpieces, “ crèches” or cribs and Nativity scenes, “mansions”, “ tréteaux”, trestles or “the boards”, baraques foraines or portable fairground booths, and “ castelets”, the generic term used in Francophone countries. Indeed, puppetry, with its rebellious tendencies, was first relegated from inside the church to its courtyard and then to the fairgrounds, due to its insolent, if not blasphemous predisposition. The puppet stage evolved in style and shape over time as a result of changes in the religious status of puppets in European culture. The word “ castelet” is the French term for a theatre structure where puppetry is performed, and it can also be a more substantial structure than the booth. Its secondary meaning, more specific to puppets, is that of a portable stage such as is used for Punch and Judy or Guignol. In a theatrical sense “booth” generally means a temporary structure in which performances can take place. It is cognate with the English word “abode”. The English term booth, for instance, is a relatively temporary structure erected for a purpose. They can be grand or humble or anything in between. Puppet stages can be fixed, permanent structures or portable frameworks that can be disassembled. Theatre structure specifically designed for puppetry. It definitely gets a little tougher in the later areas and you can set your own difficulty in a way by choosing how many “hearts” you start with as a base, but it’s pretty easy-going overall. It’s probably a bit closer to a My First Metroidvania though, as it’s completely free of combat and remains rather simple throughout its brisk, six-to-eight hour runtime. That’s to say it’s set in a single, open map marked by distinct biomes that has players explore further and deeper as they gain new abilities with which to overcome once-insurmountable obstacles. In a move I maybe wouldn’t have expected from a family-friendly Disney mascot platformer, Illusion Island is essentially a metroidvania. THE CHEAPEST PRICE: $49 AT AMAZON WITH FREE SHIPPING It’s a simple enough setup with some (incredibly predictable) twists but it’s entertaining enough thanks to great dialogue and attractive cutscenes moving the action along. The gang quickly realises they’ve been called to Monoth for a purpose though, with its adorable residents requesting their help in locating three stolen, magical tomes from the three distinct biomes of Monoth in order to restore some semblance of peace. This new adventure sees Mickey Mouse, along with Minnie, Donald and Goofy, travel to the mysterious island of Monoth for the purpose of what’s meant to be a relaxing picnic. Dlala Studios’ Switch-exclusive Disney Illusion Island isn’t strictly a part of the loose series of Illusion titles but it’s definitely a de facto spiritual successor and instantly brings to mind memories of playing those games (for me, it was often at one of those combination cafe/indoor playground places where the controllers regularly had bite marks and the screens were smeared with buttered 100s & 1000s). If you’re old enough (like I am) though, it’s the “Illusion” brand of Disney/Mickey games that are the most memorable with some entries considered among the best platformers of the 8/16-bit generation. The Epic Mickey games wound up being a highlight in the Nintendo Wii’s catalogue, for example, and if we’re counting Kingdom Hearts, well, there’s no argument there. "So with the verified purchase badges, it's Amazon on its end has confirmed that somebody purchased that product through their site.I’m genuinely not sure why Mickey Mouse hasn’t been the star of more video games of late, given Disney’s ongoing love of a bit o’ cash and the world’s most recognisable rodent being a massive draw, but the list of titles he has starred in over the years actually has some certified bangers. "Basically, anybody who's using Amazon could go on there and leave a review for something, even if they haven't bought it," Quirk said. When shopping at Amazon, it is important to check for verified purchase badges. To help identify fake reviews, the website Fakespot can be a great resource it uses an algorithm to evaluate the quality of customer reviews for products being sold at major retailers. "The next day I went back and there were like 20 to 50 new reviews and I saw they had all been posted the same time after I had looked at the page." Several positive reviews in a short time might be a sign of inauthenticity: "There was one time I realized that one day I looked at it and there was a normal amount of reviews," she commented. It's probably more likely that it's a bunch of fake reviews or somebody who's paid to do reviews and isn't really being honest about them and is just kind of churning them out."Īdditionally, Quirk recommends taking a look at time stamps. "If you see that 17 times on a page, that product better really be life-changing," Quirk stated. The Trickster is only one example of Japan’s incredibly rich world of the supernatural (or supernormal), a world that is revealed through both the arts and literature. This brings us to Japan and Japanese art. Learning about Tricksters not only challenges students to think about human psychology but also engages them in learning about the cultural contexts in which Tricksters appear. This is because the Trickster appears in the mythology, folklore, literature, and arts of cultures throughout the world. Why do cultures the world over include Tricksters in their mythology and folklore? What purpose might these figures have in humans’ worldviews: our sense of what is the norm, our thinking about wrong or right, and our explanations of why things are the way they are in the world? You can bring Trickster into classroom discussion in a literature course, a history class, social studies, anthropology, psychology, folklore studies, religion, theater, or art/art history. 3īut, the questions of why and how can make for stimulating classroom discussions. Laughter can have its own purpose it can provide healing effects, serve to educate, even be regarded as sacred. 2 Another aspect of Tricksters is that they can be humorous, but the humor in Trickster stories is not necessarily meant to be merely entertaining. Tricksters can also act as semi-divine cultural heroes, creating something positive from a potentially destructive situation by virtue of quick wit and intuition. Tricksters can be creators or destroyers, heroes or fools. They are not always negative forces, however. They have a fondness for sly jokes and malicious pranks that can result in harm to either themselves or others. They often play the role in mythology and folklore of one who turns things upside down and inside out. Tricksters the world over share a number of characteristics. Source: the Claremont Colleges Digital library. 1 Figure 1: The Lucky Tea Kettle of Morin Temple by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892), color woodblock print. Loki of Norse mythology is also sometimes regarded as a Trickster. There is Hermes in Greece, the Coyote in North America, the hare Sungura from East Africa (Tanzania and Malawi, for example), and Brer Rabbit from the American South (probably a descendant himself of Sungura), to name only a few. Trickster is one of the world’s oldest mythological figures, and examples abound in mythology and folklore worldwide. Tanuki is one of Japan’s two contributions to the archetypal Trickster, the other being kitsune, or the fox. There, the tanuki was comfortable and sometimes transformed itself into a priest instead of a kettle. In some versions of this tale, the monks decided that the captured kettle was too special to be used, so it was kept in the box. The kettle had turned into tanuki, or rather, a tanuki had turned into a kettle (Figure 1). Finally, someone managed to snatch the little kettle and thrust it into a box. The monks attempted to catch it, but the kettle flew about the room, just out of reach. The priest called in his novices to see the sight, and everyone stood aghast as the furry tea kettle scampered about the room.
